Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy uses mechanical pressure waves as an adjunct in musculoskeletal rehabilitation. At Soah Physical Therapy Clinic, it is considered only after an assessment of the painful structure, symptom history, loading pattern and relevant precautions.

What to know before choosing Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave is not appropriate for every type of pain. A physiotherapist first identifies the likely tissue involved, checks for red flags and agrees on functional goals. When clinically appropriate, shockwave is usually combined with load management and a progressive exercise plan rather than used as a stand-alone treatment.

May be considered for

  • Selected tendon or muscle conditions after assessment
  • Plantar heel pain or plantar fasciitis in selected cases
  • Some persistent localised musculoskeletal pain presentations
  • Cases where an adjunct may support a structured exercise programme

Assessment first

  • Symptom history, duration and activities that aggravate symptoms
  • Pain location, movement, strength and functional testing
  • Screening for red flags and contraindications
  • Clear rehabilitation goals and a plan to monitor response

How it fits the plan

  • Parameters and treatment area are selected individually
  • Combined with appropriate loading, mobility or strengthening exercise
  • Response is checked during and after each session
  • The plan is modified or stopped if the treatment is not appropriate

Precautions and information to tell your physiotherapist

  • • Tell the physiotherapist about bleeding disorders or anticoagulant medication
  • • Avoid use over open wounds, infection or an undiagnosed lesion
  • • Pregnancy and significant medical conditions require individual screening
  • • Progressive weakness, numbness or severe symptoms may require medical assessment first

Choose treatment from assessment findings, not the technology name alone

At Soah Clinic, a physiotherapist reviews the history and examines movement before deciding whether a modality is useful. Results and rehabilitation time vary between individuals.
